Changing Places Projects in Haringey

Changing Places are needed to meet complex toileting needs

Zack and Brian using the Changing Places at the National Gallery

What we would like to see is a number of “Changing Places” to meet the toileting needs of people with complex and challenging toileting needs. This is because universal services need to be universally accessible. Whilst the need for and careful design of disabled parking is often considered in the design of services, complex toileting needs are not.

People with very complex and multiple physical and learning disabilities cannot access standard accessible toilets. They require hoists and changing beds and one or two carers to help facilitate their personal care needs whilst maintaining their dignity and well wellbeing.

Read more about this in our blog: Haringey has asked us: If you had 15K, which public building in Haringey would you spend it on, and what would you do to it to make the building more accessible for your child? (difficultparent.com)

Photos of the opening of Changing Places, Finsbury Park

It took a bit longer than it should have, what with there being a pandemic and everything, but the Changing Places in Finsbury Park is now open.  The Changing Places are located in the old BMF changing room in the cafe and toilet block in the middle of the park and by the kids play areas. You'll need to go the cafe for the code to use the toilets during opening hours.

Now is your chance to get involved

Haringey Parks are working with a company called Astor- Bannerman and there may be an opportunity for SEND Parents to be part of some of the internal design aspects e.g. colour scheme, illustrations etc. and there are plans for a design competition.

The Parks Department have further plans for 2 more Changing Places in Queens Wood and Lordship Rec. We will let you know as soon as we know about these new Changing Places, with the Lordship Rec site due to open later in the year.

Changing Places amongst proposals for Whittington Health buildings post-consultation plans to move the Child Development Centre from St Ann's Hospital

Currently Whittington Health provide some of our children’s services from St Ann’s Hospital and from Bounds Green Health Centre. Whittington Health are proposing that we move services at the child Development Centre and Paediatric Assessment Unit from St Ann’s Hospital and the Children In Care Service from Bounds Green Health Centre to Tynemouth Road Health Centre.

The majority of our children’s services are delivered in local settings including schools, children’s centres, homes and community venues. This would not change and you should not expect where you have your appointments to change. However, we are proposing that the appointments provided at the Child Development Centre at St Ann’s Hospital move to Tynemouth Road Health Centre.

The move would involve relocating from St Ann’s Hospital the set of clinic rooms used by therapy services and community paediatrics known as the Child Development Centre and the clinic space used by the Children in Care team at Bounds Green Health Centre. In addition the office space for teams from both sites would move.

The consultation is now closed - but watch out for more details of further engagement and coproduction opportunities throughout the summer 2021.

We took part in an online event and were pleasantly pleased with the engagement team.
